The Missing Piece for Lasting Weight Loss & Quality of Life in Your Encore

Oct 24, 2025

For many accomplished women entering their encore chapters, whether in their 50s, 60s, 70s, or beyond, life is rich with experience, wisdom, and new possibilities. They have guided teams, steered organizations through uncertainty, and built a lifetime of achievements. And yet, as they look ahead to this next phase, they may find that personal well-being and lasting health feel more important and more elusive than ever before.

Is that you?

If you’ve wondered why the strengths that fueled your professional success don’t seem to translate into lasting wellness after fifty, you’re in compassionate company. This week on the Executive Encore podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with health strategist Lisa Goldberg to discuss why so many vibrant, visionary women face these challenges, and how you can create a new path forward for yourself.

Lisa brings not just expertise, but empathy and understanding to her work with women who are ready to transform the next chapter of their lives. Here are the most impactful insights and empowering takeaways from our conversation.

Why Do Successful Women in Their Encore Years Struggle with Lasting Weight Loss?

Lisa and I opened the conversation with a heartfelt discussion of a pattern she has repeatedly observed. Women who have shattered glass ceilings, risen from sticky floors, and forged new paths often contend privately with their weight. These are women who can confidently lead others but feel uncertain about their own well-being in this season of life.

Lisa shared a story about a client in her early 60s, recently retired but still deeply engaged as a mentor. Despite her leadership accomplishments, she struggled with guilt and disappointment every time her weight fluctuated. “It isn’t a willpower issue,” Lisa explained. “After fifty, our roles and routines shift. What brought you success at work—control, relentless effort—doesn’t always translate into sustainable health. Your Executive Encore calls for curiosity, self-kindness, and reinvention.”

Many women approach health as another project to finish. But Lisa’s wisdom challenges us to see sustainable, healthy weight in this new chapter as an ongoing practice, not a goal to check off. Sustainable weight provides a foundation for living fully, with purpose and vitality.

The Missing Piece for Wellness That Lasts At Any Age

As we age, our bodies and priorities inevitably shift. Lisa emphasized that transformation comes when you reflect on the why beneath your choices, especially as you move away from external deadlines and validation toward a life defined by your own values and fuelled by self-trust.

“Ask yourself,” Lisa urged, “What am I feeling when I reach for comfort food? How can I honour my hunger, my rest, my need for pleasure or connection?”

A general takeaway from this conversation was the encouragement to adopt a new perspective on success that includes our health: focus less on the number at your annual checkup or the size of your clothes, and more on experiences like climbing stairs with ease, waking up rested, or feeling energetic enough to try something new, whether that’s starting a business, mentoring the next generation, or saying yes to a long-awaited adventure.

If you want to be there for your family and passions, you have to refill your own well. You served others for decades. Now is the perfect time to serve yourself with compassion and thoughtful care.

And don’t underestimate the power of your environment. Whether you’re moving into a new home, downsizing, or working remotely, consider building spaces and maintaining an environment that supports your desired lifestyle. Keep nourishing foods within reach, mark time for “wellness appointments” in your calendar, and share your intentions with those around you. Chances are you've heard this advice before, but now's your chance to really put it into practice with purpose and intention.

Why New Weight Loss Drugs Aren’t the Answer for Holistic Health

The media is abuzz with talk of breakthrough weight loss drugs. But Lisa encourages women in their encore years to pause before reaching for a quick solution. “These options can offer results, but they’re not a substitute for the internal work of lasting change,” she said. “Wellness at this stage is about integration: your habits, your self-image, your joy in daily living based on the lifestyle you want.”

Lisa pointed out that the real transformation happens off the prescription pad. It’s in the choices you make to care for yourself, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The magic of your next chapter lies in building daily rituals that reflect who you want to be —vibrant, creative, and resilient —and the lifestyle you want. This is the lifestyle you yearned for while you were building your career.

Lisa’s message is clear: The most powerful medicine for this phase of life is self-compassion and a commitment to showing up for doing what's best for you, consistently and kindly.

Actionable Takeaways for Your Encore Years

Lisa’s advice is rooted in nutritional experience, mindset and weight loss expertise, and is actionable for women seeking reinvention, joy, and energy at every age. Here are a few steps you can start today:

  1. Listen to Your Self-Talk: Over the course of a week, notice how you speak to yourself about food, health, and your own worth. Lisa says, “Awareness is the seed of growth. Be gentle; you’re learning a new way to thrive.”
  2. Celebrate Non-Scale Triumphs: Notice when you have more energy for your activities that you love, enjoy a pain-free movement, or find peace in quiet moments. These are victories that matter.
  3. Prioritize Yourself on Your Calendar: Whether it’s an afternoon for reflection, a favourite movement class, or a nourishing meal, schedule this time as non-negotiable. “In this chapter,” Lisa reminds us, “your well-being is both the foundation and the reward of a life well-lived.” I agree!

You’ve built a life of meaning, impact, and success. Your next chapter deserves the same intention, one in which you are the priority, your health is non-negotiable, and every day becomes an opportunity to flourish.

This is where your Executive Encore begins. It's your time to live, work, and lead differently.

Are you ready to unlock your potential and design a life of impact and fulfillment?

Invest in your well-being with the same passion you invested in your career. Now is your time to thrive, on your terms.
